Wears like a shirt yet protects you like a coat. Thermal, wind-blocking, and breathable. Comfortable even when you come in out of the cold.

"This is legitimately like wearing a jacket without the bulk. It's thinner around the torso making it perfect for those that wear a ballistic vest. Wore it in -0 weather and it was great. It's a good wind stopper as well."—Joel M. (Jan. 9, 2022)

All you need in cold winter weather is Stage 3, which you wear under your body armor (even better: under your Maxx-Dri Vest!). It keeps you warm and comfortable, providing full thermal protection to sub 15-degrees Fahrenheit (-9.45C). It blocks wind and resists water.

Importantly, Stage 3 is breathable. You don't overheat going out into the cold and then back into warm buildings and squad cars. Also, the material that covers the core is thinner so that you don't overheat under your armor vest.

Full Freedom of Movement

The Stage 3 material is thin and stretchy, so you have full freedom of movement and flexibility to do the job without compromising safety: to easily access gear on your duty belt, and to chase and handle unruly suspects.

By liberating police and other users of body armor from the constraints of bulky winter coats, Stage 3 is truly a game changer.

"I absolutely love it. I have the level 3 and I am a police officer in Ohio where it can be quite cold. Super comfortable and breathable. 100 times better than any under armor item I've ever purchased."
—Korey K. (Jan. 27, 2018)

"Right now in Chicago it’s 10 degrees with high winds, everyone at my agency is wearing a coat. All i’m wearing is my thermal with a vest carrier, and I don’t feel the cold coming through at all." —Samuel B. (Jan. 5, 2022)

Innovative Design & Materials

The benefits of Stage 3 are achieved through innovative design and materials. Despite being thin and stretchy, the Stage 3 fabric is a triple layer of three different materials heat-pressed together. The outer layer is a soft, stretchy, breathable polyurethane fabric that blocks wind. The middle layer resists water and blocks wind. And the inner layer, which touches your body, is a soft grid-thermal fleece that maintains your body heat.

Thermal material covers your shoulders, sleeves and upper chest. Tight wrist cuffs ensure that cold air doesn’t run up your arms. The mock-neck design protects your neck. But you need to breath at the core, the torso. So the core of Stage 3 is made with moisture-wicking, breathable material to keep you dry. It's thinner than the rest of the garment so you don't overheat under your body armor.

"I work in WI so I need to be warm in the winter. I do not like to wear a coat, as I personally feel it is hard to get to my gear. This is PERFECT! I stay warm but I am not sweating under my vest. LOVE IT!!" —Lina E. (Feb. 9, 2019)

UNREAL !!

I had been wearing this shirt as a base for a while and was thoroughly impressed with its day to day comfort in the basic cold weather, between -10 and -25 degrees Celsius or so, which of course was in and out of the vehicle, with relatively short exposure times outdoors during my shifts. However, on one occasion, its performance particularly blew me away. I was wearing this shirt as a base thermal with only a light fleece overtop, and then my SBA, during a colder night shift at around -37 degrees Celsius (almost -35 F). A coworker was operating a snowmobile on a stranded UTV call patrol, and grew too cold to continue, but we were still 15 minutes from home base. I volunteered to give it a try, wrapping an extra coverage around my neck area, fully expecting it would last not even a minute and there’d be no way to continue. What followed was me being able to operate for about half the distance, stopping once to warm up briefly (mainly for my legs), and then continue the rest of the way. I was absolutely shocked at how well this piece performed with what was such an extreme cold without even factoring in the wind chill that would have been produced by operating the snowmobile in those conditions. When we got back, my partner felt my outside layer, which obviously was cold to touch, but when I told him I was a bit chilly, but not cold feeling underneath on my upper body area, he was shocked. I’m not sure how they have managed to get such cold performance out of such a pliable and non-restrictive material, but they made a believer out of me on that cold night patrol. Keep up the great work 221B!

Warm

This shirt is better than even advertised. Even though I’m in Florida, nights shift can be cold. This shirt is not bulky, and is WARM. I bought another after the success of the first.

Equinoxx Stage 3

Love the base layer as far as comfort goes. Fits as described. I don't believe its quite as warm as described. My first day wearing was 10 degrees above and I still feel like I need an additional layer. The shipping was very slow almost a month before getting here. I did speak to helpful lady named Richelle who was helpful from a customer service aspect.

Thank you for your review. FYI, we also offer an even warmer shirt in case you may not have known about it. It's called The Equinoxx K2 Dyna-Thermal - Cold-Weather Thermal Protection + Full Mobility. Link to its product page is: https://www.221btactical.com/products/equinoxx-k2-thermal. Most people in law enforcement, and who wear body armor for a long duration, are satisfied with the Equinoxx Stage 3. For those who are in very cold climates, the K2 Dyna Thermal is another good option. Hope this helps. Thanks again!

Mixed Review

Ordered two of these shirts after being given the recommendation by a coworker. Took me exactly a month to get my order while waiting to receive my order I reached out to customer service multiple times with no response. Once I got my order I only received one shirt. Called customer service said nice again with no response. Called the owners number. He answered and was very apologetic about the issue and said he would let the warehouse know immediately.

Now the shirt is well worth the price. It keeps me warm on cold nights. Can’t wait to receive my second one!

Thank you for your review, and for your patience with us because of the shipping issue. Please let us know if you have further questions or concerns anytime. Meanwhile, glad the shirt has proven helpful to you. - Brad @ 221B

Must-have Cold Weather Gear

I work for a midwestern department where we regularly see sub-zero temperatures with windchill plunging it to the -40s (F). Normally, my layers are 3.0 base layer, uniform shirt, coat, and external carrier. I absolutely despise wearing a coat under my vest.

After some brief shipping issues worked out with some fantastic customer service skills by 221B, I received the base layers a day before we had our deep freeze and figured I would REALLY put the base layer to the test. I took the coat out of my layers and worked patrol with just the base layer, uniform shirt, and external carrier.

On getting my patrol unit ready, I noticed I was actually starting to break a bit of sweat with it being between -10 and 0 degrees (no wind) and besides some minor chills, it really felt no different than being outside on a cool summer night to me (60-70 degree comparison). I worked like this for approximately 3-4 hours at which point windchill dropped the temperature to in between -30 and -25 degrees with a cutting wind. The wind cut through the base layer like a knife but credit where its due, this is the type of cutting, cold wind that would cut through ANY base layer. Even with this wind, the cold I experienced was more of an uncomfortable cold and not an unbearable, "I need to put a coat on NOW" cold. After I put just a windbreaker on, I had no issues with the cold. With my 3.0's, I had to wear an actual coat and not a windbreaker in this chilling cold wind.

The following nights I worked in -10 to 0 degree weather and even with light winds (that were not cutting) taking windchill to the -15 range, I did not need a coat. So I think I have definitely pushed and tested the limits in the most extreme way of this base layer.

Overall, these will be my new extreme weather base layers as just in the brief amount of time I've used them they have proven themselves to be extremely worthwhile in the extreme cold we have here. I will be recommending the products to any new trainees we hiring on and have been directing shift-mates to the products as the majority of them also despise wearing coats.
